Fall 2008

All work and no play...

We just refuse to have any fun around here. The crush pad is a serious place for some serious wine making. There's absolutely no laughing, no joking, and no messing around. Our crush crew stays 100% focused. With great intensity, they have been sorting fruit, pulling out leaves and stems, and zipping around on fork lifts like it's the Fork Lift Olympics. You don't want to get in their way.

2008 Harvest Report

Holy cow, it was a cold one! But a dandy. Hopefully I won't end up eating my words, but this could be the best vintage of Merlot we've seen since 1999. The cooler year brought great balance in all of the fruit, but particularly the Merlot. We're seeing great color, wonderful fruit development with lower sugar levels which translates into lower alcohols and more balanced wines. The second week of October brought some freezing temperatures and forced us to pick some Cabernet Sauvignon a little early. The leaves were toasted, but absolutely no need to worry! We'll still be able to make some very nice wine with it. The early picking log jammed our winery to the point where there was simply no more room!  We even had to put a bin of fermenting grapes in Jennifer's lap.  This delayed the picking of some fruit, but temperatures remained low enough that we had the option of letting the fruit hang longer without the threat of over-ripening.  PHEW!

The rest of harvest was wonderful. Temperatures remained cool, and we picked fruit that will allow us to create some fantastic, extremely well structured Cabernet Sauvignon with overall lower alcohols than we've seen in the past 8 years. We're real happy.

Crush was slow and steady...it was a tortoise of a year and we even stopped to take nap.

FALL RELEASE WINES!
November 8th, 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, step right up to the much anticipated looming spectre of FALL RELEASE at Reininger Winery! The highlight of the weekend will arguably be the 2005 Helix Sangiovese. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Chuck wrapped Sophia Loren up in a caramel-drizzled raspberry tort, lightly spritzed her with Victoria's Secret Rapture perfume, and coaxed her into this bottle with a bouquet of exotic flowers.
The Wine Enthusiast agrees
giving this wine 91 Points!
